From an EMDR trained therapist…
Once therapeutic goals are set, and we are prepared, we start STABILIZATION!
We introduce practices into your current life that enhance your ability to be regulated, be present, and increase your window of tolerance.
In the next stage, we identify a TARGET!
This can be a memory, thought, sensation, or emotion that is negatively affecting you today.
Then we begin PROCESSING by applying back and forth vibrations, sound, or eye movements while working with distressing memories.
We do this to support your brain’s natural ability to make meaning in it’s own way, and help you move forward with less distress from these triggers
During processing, you may experience a flurry of images or thoughts in your mind… Kind of like watching a movie (one possible experience)
This is your brain forming it’s own meaning making experience!
The goal is to help these experiences feel less distressing and less disruptive in your present life.
We might also process FUTURE SCENARIOS that may re-activate or trigger these maladaptive experiences.
This helps with developing more adaptive ways of responding.
P.S. This is a simplified explanation for a complex, multistage process! Everyone experiences EMDR differently. EMDR does not erase or alter your memories and it is not recommended for everyone!
You don’t have to verbally recount every detqail of a traumatic experience for EMDR to be effective.
